Technology and Society

What if you have the ability to travel back in the past then what do you want to do? Well, if I will this question my answer would just be sightseeing. If I have that ability to fly back into the past I would like to witness the evolution of technology and its effects in the society from yesterday until the present time. It is because technology is a very important thing to all of us. In addition to that the past displays that as soon as a new technology is introduced to the society, the society changes. That is one thing I wanted to witness in the ancient times for the reason that technology has been a great help to us, to everyone. We gain a lot of benefits from it. For example, it has improved every countries economy, improved our lives, and a lot more.

From an article it cited in The Impact of Technology on Society that James Burke, Connections states, “. . . the moment man first picked up a stone or a branch to use as a tool, he altered irrevocably the balance between him and his environment. From this point on, the way in which the world around him changed was different. It was no longer regular or predictable. New objects appeared that were not recognizable as a mutation of something that had existed before, and as each one emerged it altered the environment not for a season but for ever. While the number of these tools remained small, their effect took a long time to spread and to cause change. But as they increased, so did their effects: the more the tools, the faster the rate of change."

We already knew that technology has been part of our daily living. Wherever we go we see and we use technology. The importance of technology has been recognized by man way back in the ancient times. It has become a part of our system. Its evolution has helped us perk up our lives. And the progress of technology had built a conduit between man and nature. (Wikipedia, 2008) delineates technology as a broad concept that deals with an animal species’ usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects an animal species’ ability to control and adapt to its environment. The man’s usage of technology started with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools.

Our ancestors have developed different technologies for their day by day living. It has been difficult to them to live at ease without any tools to use. That is why they created technologies to make their lives easier, as a way out to their dilemma. In addition, they have developed an assortment of technologies that led us to what we make use of in the present day. For the reasons that, according to the Wikipedia (2008) were it states that technology enables greater knowledge of international issues, values, and cultures. This is due mostly to mass transportation and mass media, the world seems to be a much smaller place, and due to the following, among others: globalization of ideas, firstly, then the embeddedness of values, the growth of population and control, and many others

The presence of technology had a definite effect to ones society. According to (Wikipedia, 2008) that technology has helped develop more advance economies and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. In addition to that the implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. It is the rise of conception of efficiency in terms of human productivity. And lastly, the technological processes produce unwanted by-products such as pollution, and deplete natural resources to the detriment of the Earth and its environment.

The technology and society had a synergistic relationship. This relationship occurred long time ago. The bloom of this relationship is from the invention of simple tools until it continuous development (continues until modern technologies) that we using today. If I were to give an example of a technology to present the effect of it to the society is the mobile phone. Human had wondered how to improve communication. They are curious on how to talk to their special someone from a far away place. Before, the communication takes a long time. They use a messenger to relay the message from one person to another person where the distance between the two (the sender and the receiver) is seven mountains apart. And then, as time flies by, the communication evolved, from mailing of letter to telegram to phone. People are always wondering how to make communication faster and better. With this mentality of man had led us to the development of mobile phone. The development of mobile phone had a great influence in the society and the way people live their daily life. Still man is still wondering for improvements to communication.

Technology had encouraged the development of more elaborate economies. It has said that technology is inseparable to human society and every implementation of technology influences the values of a society by changing the expectations and realities. According to the Wikipedia (2008) that there are three major values that is affected with technological innovations: the mechanical world view, efficiency and social progress as stated by McGinn (1991). This is for the reason that in every implementation of new technology there is nothing that cannot be understood by human intelligence. Human is very adaptable. And also man is always expecting for a higher and higher percentage of output, ability or performance so that man develops machines that are efficient and could reach this expectations. In addition to that, man developed technologies to make their lives easier. And with this there is a social progress between people and this is the beneficent, kind or generous thing that man could gain from it.

The development of technology simplifies our life. It gives rise of a leisure class. An informed society can make quicker responses to events and trends. Technology sets more complex learning tasks and increases multi-tasking. It offers greater specialization in jobs and it also offers cheaper prices. The above mentioned are the benefits we gain from new innovations but in some ways technology complicates our lives. For example, pollution and structural unemployment that is according to Wikipedia (2008).

Technologies have had a great effect to every society. There have been huge demands for competent people that are knowledgeable to technology. Or people who have the skills. But unfortunately in the Philippines though our country is adapting to the fast changing world when it comes to technology is having a problem regarding to the production of competent people who has the right skills. With this the Philippine government is looking for ways to address this matter. In order to produce globally competent and skilled workers they introduced a ladderized curriculum that matches the other countries’ standards probably the American standard. It is implemented to every school, universities and other institutions whose goals are to produce technically skilled graduates. It will serve as a guide of what should be taught and as a guide of what are the needed skills outside or inside the country.

Time by time the innovations regarding technology evolves. There is a continuous advancement of these technologies. These advanced technologies are what the big or small companies use or adapts. These rapid changes in technology also make them ask for skilled people. The hiring and accepting of new employees should be modernized where the advancement of technology is utilized well. The companies’ acceptance or the hiring of an employee should go to a thorough training so that it could meet the demands.

Wherever you look at technology is always present. In every company, their have been a competition and technology has played a significant role in it. They may not take a glance of it before but however they had taken a notice the importance of technology to their success. That goes the same to government. No one had expected that the technology would have a huge impact to our society as wide as this. Producing people with competency through trainings and ladderized curriculum. The advancement of the technology pushes every company to be more creative in maximizing technology as well as the available resources.

The Philippines had embraced the evolution of technology and had make use of it. Their have a big demands of technology skilled people. The world is need of these kinds of people. The country is need of these kinds of people in order to survive these global competitions. Technology is with us even before. Utilizing the availability of resources in the country is the foundation in addressing the countries’ skills in the continuous advancement in technology sectors.

Trust in E-commerce

Trust is just a simple word that is very important to man. Trusting someone and being trusted is something that you can’t be getting in an instance, in a blink of an eye. Trusting it has been a part to human personality that is given and gain by people who are worthy of that trust. The word trust is just a single expression other than with of the essence of importance to humanity. Wherever you go trust is as important as water. And in addition to that, as stated by (Heathfield, 2008) is that according to Dr. Duane C. Tway, Jr. in his 1993 dissertation, A Construct of Trust, "There exists today, no practical construct of Trust that allows us to design and implement organizational interventions to significantly increase trust levels between people. We all think we know what Trust is from our own experience, but we don't know much about how to improve it. Why? I believe it is because we have been taught to look at Trust as if it were a single entity."

Trust forms the foundation for effective communication, employee retention, and employee motivation and contribution of discretionary energy, the extra effort that people voluntarily invest in work (Heathfield, 2008). Trust, it is something that man are seeking to get to everyone. It is the feeling of to be trusted and to trust. It is a very serious possession to mankind. It is a possession that is so valuable. It is as precious as diamond that can not be bought. It is too hard to obtain. It is in the vein of the worth when you join a competition like an amazing race and win. Isn’t the winning price is a very worthy thing to achieve. It is the price that you have worked so hard for. It is something gained that you are worthy to be entrusted of something important. It is just similar to trust. To be able to gain the trust from someone is a very worthy achievement and you have to keep it, maintain it to last.

The importance of trust in mankind is so important. Its essence is as essential as our basic needs. It is like food, like clothing, and like shelter. Once you have it or gain it you will have the feeling of satisfaction for the reason that it is not easy to get hold of. Once you are entrusted by a person in its trust you have to keep that trust, maintain it. But, on the other hand, once this trust once is broke it would create a big problem. It is the same as living in hell. In addition to that, if ever you broke a person’s trust, it won’t do well to you. And also if you want to win it back would be hard. To illustrate, it just like the song by Parokya ni Edgar. In their song it states in comparison that trust and chocolate. It says that when a chocolate melts it would be hard to remold it into its original form just like the trust that once broke it is hard to gain it back.

Trust is a state of mind that is difficult or impossible to measure (Ciscoetl, 2008). Just looking to your surroundings trust is a vital thing to all. Any where you look trust is always there. Within your family trust is an important thing that gets a hold to keep the whole family together. Once this trust to each other is lost then the presence of love and peace in the family will fade away in grey. Fighting and hatred will reign in the family. Friendship, trust is also important to keep this friendship last. If the trust within friends is lost probably your best friend will be you greatest enemy.

No single person would want to lose the trust that they worked so hard for to obtain, right? In every aspect of our lives trust is very essential. Even in businesses, trust is also important in the success of an industry, in electronic commerce. In addition to that, in business it is important because it gives you the sense of security about a trusted party (Building E-Commerce Trust Applying Usability Principles). If trust does not exist then you cannot gain customers. But why is that so? (Bloomgarden, Trust: The Secret Weapon of Effective Business Leaders) states that trust plays an important role in a business’s corporate strategy because trust brings into vivid focus the characteristics that make today’s leaders successful, and the principles and techniques they use to earn the confidence of employees, colleagues, customers and the public.

In addition to that importance of trust is as stated in (E-Commerce Relationships, 2005) that there are wide range of benefits of trust in electronic commerce and those are lowering transaction costs (Gulati, 1995), promoting desirable behaviors, reducing the extent of formal contracts, and facilitating dispute resolutions (Ring & Van de Ven, 1994). Thus, a strong establishment of trust is very vital for the success of a business in particular to those who are engaged in electronic commerce.

According to (E-Commerce Relationship, 2005), it states that in electronic commerce trust has its two forms: the first form is trust in technology relating to institutional structural assurances and security mechanisms embedded in electronic commerce technologies and relationship trust referring to trading partners competent, predictability, reliability and benevolence in the electronic commerce relationship.

In addition to the statement stated above, as stated by (Doyle & Melanson, 2001; Hoffman et al., 1999; Jarvenpaa et al., 2000; Narayandas, Caravella & Deighton, 2002) that trust plays a significant role in electronic commerce because of the following reasons: anonymity, lack of control, lack of physical proximity, potential opportunism, and inefficiencies in web technology (E-Commerce Relationship, 2005).

Faith, Belief, and Hope are synonymous to the word trust. Gaining loyal customers is impossible if trust is not gained. To trust is to give hope. To trust is to have faith. To trust is to give hope. But in order for us to understand the importance of trust in electronic commerce is that to have knowledge in four areas. According to (Building e-Commerce Trust Applying Usability Principles) these areas that are needed to understand the importance of trust are Internet, electronic commerce, web design, electronic commerce trust and usability. For better understanding, in addition to that, it explains that Internet is the fastest growing mediums in the world and thus, the success f it makes it indispensable for companies to have an online presence. And with the rapid growth of Internet and as it gain popularity among the people around the globe it makes the distances between people shorter and makes the market competitions to be global.

In addition to that areas in the importance of trust to electronic commerce is because electronic commerce is an integral part of electronic business (or e-business) in which it involves buying and selling of goods and services by the use of electronic means. And because of this it gives an option to consumers to shop online (or cross shopping).

To gain the trust of your consumers is the web design. To define, web design is the process of developing a website which is in accordance to pre-set codes. Websites, consumers use electronic commerce websites because they wanted convenience and ease in its usage thus, when designing it websites should be simple, clear, easy and transparent. Other than that consumers wanted to feel assured that the information they submitted are safe. And in order for them feel that their information is secured, according to (Enge, 2007) that putting a HackerSafe service logo on your electronic commerce website assures the consumer (or business-to-business customer) that the information submitted in the electronic commerce website is protected from hackers.

In addition, according to the article “Building E-Commerce Trust Applying Usability Principles” is that there are factors that increase the level of trust in electronic commerce. And those are through the increase in experience with the Internet, increase of numbers of hour’s online, use the web for financial services, and lastly, significantly relying on electronic mail. But the most important to gain trust is the facilitating the buying process of customers as much as possible.

The trust has ad been a vital role business more specifically in electronic commerce because from the word of (Heathfield, 2008) says that from additional research by Tway and others shows that trust is the basis for much of the environment you want to create in your work place. And trust is the necessary precursor for the following: feeling able to rely upon a person, cooperating with and experiencing teamwork with a group, taking thoughtful risks, and experiencing believable communication.

The importance of trust has been significantly seen on how security measures are implemented. Having a strong security on your websites will invite consumers or give an impression that your electronic commerce website is worthy of their trust. But, on the other hand, there is an article (The Importance of Trust in the eCommerce Segment, 2007) that I read regarding the importance of trust in electronic commerce that the cause of purchase hesitation by the consumers to without national or well-known trusted brands is because of the lack of consumer confidence. It is because data security is always a threat, mediocre merchant performance consistently and overwhelming represents the greatest risk to online shoppers and so, for them to be able gain the trust of consumers to support their products and services through lowering of prices. To win the hearts of the consumers is through price. It is said that price is the most important factor in a buyer’s decision to make a purchase online or not. In the present day, we could see that there are lots of consumers who do their transactions electronically, mostly through the use of internet. Try visiting some of websites we could see that if you compare the prices or the total expenses doing a transaction through internet and through a manual process (or the normal process) you could come up with the conclusion that the consumers are assured that doing transaction online is much of its advantage on their part. Therefore, the implementation of strong security measures in your website will be a great help to you in order for you to gain your consumer’s trust. And in addition to that it is a vital thing that you implement security strictly, gain the trust of your consumers so that you business will keep running.

Trust is just a simple word. It is already on us. We could trust the people if you wanted to. It is a choice. In our everyday life trust is vital possession to us. It is gained and it could be given. The word trust is all around us. It is always with us. Where ever we go and whatever we do trust is there. It lives within us. We could see trust in our family, friends, and work and even in the success of a business. Trust plays an important role to everything we do; to each one of us.

Technology as the biggest contributor to climate change

Technology has been part of our daily living. Wherever we go we see and we use technology. The importance of technology has been recognized by man way back in the ancient times. It has become a part of our system. Its evolution has helped us perk up our lives. And the progress of technology had built a conduit between man and nature. Wikipedia (2008) delineates technology as a broad concept that deals with an animal species’ usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects an animal species’ ability to control and adapt to its environment.

Man’s instincts have proved to be helpful to them, as well as to new generation. If they haven’t made an attempt in exploring we could have been stayed in Stone Age. The highly developed technology had been a most important to be of assistance to one and all. Other than that the foundation of technology have had its positives and negatives; pros and cons. The establishments of new technologies have been helpful to human being while some have been harmful, on the other hand.

Most of technologies have been beneficial to all of us. In addition to technology’s benefits, just for instance, the discovery of the ability to control fire had increased the availability of food sources, the invention of wheel have been a great helped in traveling and controlling the environment, and other technological advancements (e. g. telephone) have slowly eliminated the barriers in communication. But, however, humans have also developed destructive weapons (e.g. nuclear weapons) that have had a huge impact to society (Wikipedia, 2008).

Human developed technology for their own benefits and also for their own destruction. The result of their development is either for their own personal interest or not. The technologies that man created for their own beneficial have had its consequences; have had its negatives effects. To give a case in point to the negative consequences of man’s construction is the development of atomic bomb during the World War II. Haven’t this technology had wiped away hundreds of lives? We could regard it as one of the most destructive technologies that man has ever produced. When an atomic bomb was detonated in Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki have demonstrated a massive effect of environmental harms and alienation of human. The atomic bomb emits radiation that could harm one’s health. When an individual is once exposed this will result to a high-dose of radiation that caused a high-rate of leukemia among the survivors (Lichtman, 2006). This is just an example of the dangers of the usage of technology to mankind as well as to our environment. It may have been helpful to us but their have been debates whether the development of technology have helped human condition or worsen it. Does the evolution of technology really help?

In some ways technology is really a great help and may have an enormous effect in the society. One of the technology’s benefits is that it has helped most of the countries’ economies to rise but however, it also produced unwanted by-products such as pollution and depletion in natural resources. And with this it shows how technology had damaged the Earth and its environment. To give a paradigm among of the concerns are the rapid increase in the temperature of the Earth, the warming of the Earth.

Going back to our science classes, we learned that the earth is blanketed with different gases that warm the Earth’s surface. The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of these different gases that helps regulate Earth’s temperature. And the absence of these gases will result to a cold environment that would be impossible for human habitation.

In addition to that fact, the Earth’s atmosphere is composed of different gases such as Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), and other gases called as greenhouse gases. These gases help pertain heat to a very important process known as the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect occurs when the sunlight passes to the atmosphere of the Earth and strikes the Earth’s surface. In which some of the lights are reflected while some are absorbed that helps in warming the surface of the Earth. The heated surface of the Earth radiates infrared light that is absorbed by the greenhouse gases.

The greenhouse gases have a vital role in balancing the Earth’s temperature. And thus, if the amounts of greenhouse gases are increased it will result to an embellished greenhouse effect called as global warming. A few increases in degrees in the Earth’s temperature could cause to a huge environmental problems. To delineate, the global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere, oceans and land masses of Earth (Hart, 2006).

Global warming is now considered as one of the crucial problems the world is facing of. Their have been masses of researches that are conducted to find out the core of the crisis as well as seeking for possible solutions. Some have said that technology is the chief contributor to climate change, or to global warming. Climatologists say that there are different factors that influenced the Earth’s climate change. These are the internal factors and the external factors. These factors are the basic components that affect the climate of the Earth. The extraterrestrial factors or the external factors are the solar output, Earth-Sun Geometry, Interstellar Dust while conversely; the internal factors are volcanic emissions, mountain buildings, continental drift, atmosphere/ocean heat exchange, surface reflectivity, atmospheric reflectivity, and atmospheric chemistry (Didwirny, 2006). The factors aforementioned have been the primary responsible for most of the past episodes of climate change.

There may have been different factors that affect the climate of the Earth. It is either due to the environment or due to human activities. The continuous increase in the Earth’s temperature had awakened the senses of human being. This exaggerated warming of the Earth had forced human beings to seek out for solutions to this problem. They have conducted researches on the factors that have an effect on the climate change the most. According to Didwirny (2006), the Carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor, and methane is capable of altering the energy balance of the Earth by being able to absorb long wave radiation emitted from the Earth’s surface. Just for instance, the Carbon dioxide is stored in the ocean. When it is warm the Carbon dioxide (CO2) are released while on the other hand, when it is cool the Carbon dioxide are diffused. But, there have been an increase of Carbon dioxide (CO2) over the past three centuries because of human activities. Such human activities are the burning of fossil fuels and the cutting down of trees that reduces the capability of the nature to lessen the amount of Carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. We have learned that trees and other species of plants have the capability to convert the Carbon dioxide (CO2) into Oxygen. This natural process helps in balancing the amount of Carbon dioxide (CO2) being emitted in the atmosphere. But however, the sad thing is that we human have violated this process to improve our lives. But does it really help us? Or does the opposite?

Debates regarding is matter are now in its peak. Leaders of every nation, researchers and man had already made its move to prevent this climate change, to prevent global warming. One of the solutions provided is that to minimize the emissions of greenhouse gases such as Carbon dioxide (CO2). This is to stabilize the emissions of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. But how could this be possible? This is possible we all of us help each other in finding ways in seeking for alternatives or other sources of technology that emits less greenhouse gases instead of continuous burning of fossil fuels use other energy sources.

The use of technology had been the prime reason of the occurrence of global warming, they say. Yes it is true. But, however, there is nothing they can do, we can do. It had already reached to this point. On the other hand, since we can do nothing in stopping it but we can still prevent it in reaching to worst stage. It is the only possible solution left. A famous quotation says that prevention is better than cure. The leading contributor of greenhouse gases emissions are looking for possible solutions. For example, in India, they started using renewable energy technologies. They had established a full-fledged national ministry to deal with renewable such biogas and wind energy.

People may say that big industrial companies are the lead contributors to greenhouse gas emissions but it is only the source of greenhouse gas emissions? Even if the leader of every countries and the government find ways in finding for solution to this problem but if the citizens are not contributing or helping there is no use of it. Take a look of our surroundings. Each one of us uses technology therefore, each of us are contributors of greenhouse gases emissions. I, myself, cannot escape to this fact. We must do something.

Let me quote a line from a song Let There be Peace that states that let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. This song talks about peace but how does this relates in participating in the prevention of the emission of greenhouse gases? Doesn’t there is a line that says “…let it begin with me?” Yes, the success of the prevention of the greenhouse gases emission must begin with us. There is a saying that if you want an improvement to your surrounding, let’s says to the government, we should start within our selves.

As an IT student and being aware of the situation I should start contributing in helping address this global problem. I should take a lead so that others will follow, but how? Should I stop using technology in my daily living? I think it is impossible. Technology has been a part to our daily living. It is now the global language as source of revenue as well as entertainment.

To stop is not the answer. Wherever we are technology is always there. We could see its presence. Wanting to help doesn’t necessarily big contributions. Small actions or small contributions are as important as those big contributions. Small once are helpful enough to preventing the emission of greenhouse gases to the Earth’s atmosphere. But what should I do if I wanted to help and how? Firstly, look around you. Look at your surroundings and ask your self, “What are our daily activities that emit greenhouse gases?” Think about it carefully and if you found one, what do you do? Will you just look, let it be a big contributor to increase the amount of greenhouse gases to the Earth atmosphere and what? And let your self suffer in the near future? I am sure you don’t want that to happen, me either. So together, let us be aware of our every action. Let us not be impulsive in the every thing that we do. Think carefully before you do such action either it is reckless or not. Then, do something. Let us do something in order to help contribute in minimizing the continuous emission of greenhouse gases.

Be aware. Do something. What are those small things that could be very helpful in minimizing the amount emitted of greenhouse gases to the Earth’s atmosphere? In our younger years we where taught about the 3 R’s. It is even strongly and actively advertised by the government through the use of media. This 3 R’s represents as Reuse, Recycle and Reduce. Instead of throwing and burning our garbage everywhere, anywhere it would be best if we check those garbage if there is something that could be still useful. Or check if there are still things that could be used and converted into new product. In that way we could help addressing the global problem, the global warming and also we could help in minimizing the quantity of garbage we throw. And, in addition to that, the recycled garbage that is turned into new products, we could earn a living through that right? Isn’t it killing three birds with one stone? There are still people who continuously burn their garbage. The burned garbage emits unwanted gases that are harmful to our environment as well as to our health other than that with this small action and what is the most important thing to consider is we could slowly stop the burning of garbage. Isn’t it feels good to live in a place where it’s clean, fresh and cooling?

Do you remember the feeling sleeping soundly under the green trees? This was the time when the trees are still rich. Doesn’t it feel good? It feels cooling and refreshing. And also it feels so relaxing. But as time passed by the abundance of trees is starting to diminish. And it is also the time where it starts to get warmer and warmer day by day. It is the time where the feeling of freshness and coolness is starting to be replaced by a very hot feeling and we are starting to get irritated by the Earth’s warm temperature. This is probably because of global warming and the continuous cutting down of trees. Then how do we address this? To address this problem then we should stop cutting down the trees but rather start reforestation. Let us start to revive the beautiful past where the beautiful and bountiful trees are seen. Let us start to plant trees. This way we could feel the cooling and refreshing feeling like before but what is important is that we could help in addressing the global problem, the climate change. With this, the presence of trees could help in minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases by converting the emitted Carbon dioxide (CO2) into Oxygen. Stop deforestation but instead start reforestation.

It was said that vehicles emits gases that contributes to climate change. Since the discovery of vehicles have helped us to make the traveling from one place to other place no matter how long the distance of that place would. However, even if vehicles had helped us so much but it has its cons. Vehicles, as one of the contributors of global warming. Then what actions should be taken in order to help in minimizing the emission of this greenhouse gases? We can not eliminate the presence of vehicles in our daily living since it a very helpful discovery to make transportation easier and make the distance between places shorter. So to address the problem regarding to vehicles as contributor to global warming is to minimize the usage of vehicles as possible. Travel the places with short distances through walking or through the use vehicles that doesn’t emit unwanted gases just like bicycles. In this way we can help save the mother Earth in order to lessen the greenhouse gases emission through the use of environment friendly technology. And also in this means we can also save. It lessen our travel expenses while at the same time helping in lessening the giving off of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The mentioned ways above are the most and the simplest way to help the government, the entire humanity, the Earth and its environment. The things that are mentioned could be done by each one of us however, being an Information Technology student this isn’t just the only way to help in addressing the global problem regarding climate change. This isn’t just it is. As a student belonging to the world of information technology and has the privilege of accessing this technology by global means, it may be simple act but it could still help in addressing the problem regarding climate change is through information drive. Since the availability and the usage of technology is global and wide, to help in extending of the knowledge and information regarding the global warming and the simple ways in addressing the global problems would be a great help. It is just a simple act though. Since everyone has an access in the internet, strongly participating in the campaign in addressing the global problem. Though, everyone already has a knowledge regarding this problem but continuously reminding every person in every country regarding this matter.

There are many different factors that affect the climate change but the one who has the biggest contribution regarding this problem is man. Human activities had a definite effect to it. The advancement of technology to make our lives easier but on the other hand it had its negatives. The most technologies created by man emit unwanted gases, the greenhouse gases. In the past, man had been unaware with the negative effects of this action. And then later they realized and had been trying to find ways in addressing the problem. The first step in addressing this problem is awakening of the awareness of each one of us regarding this matter is important in addressing this global problem, in addressing climate change. From their study, they arrived to a conclusion that the possible way in addressing this problem is by minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases. The developed countries, as they said as one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases mandated policies in minimizing the emissions of these gases like the emission of Carbon dioxide () for example. But it isn’t enough. Each one of us is contributors so then together let’s take an action to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases. Simple yet helpful. Be aware and do something.

Significant Events in Society in Relation to Innovation in Technology

Looking back in the past, our ancestors had lived their lives in accordance to the availability of resources. However, as time passed by they realized that there is something lacking in their daily living. They have become curious to their surroundings. In addition, they have begun exploring the things around them. Their exploration had lead to new discoveries. Through explorations, they had tried to come across to answer their questions and find solutions to every problem.

Curiosity has become the major factor why man seeks for new things in life. It is just a simple word but had a huge effect to the society, to the mankind, to our way of living; from simplicity to a more advance living. Being curious to things around us is one trait that has been part of human personality. As we see things that are unusual to us we tend to find what it is, how it works and what its use is. It is because we are curious.

It is because of man’s curiosities that lead us to discover and to create something new. Something that is beneficial to us, to all. It has been the prime reason why there are innovations that are useful while some are distractive. In addition to these innovations that lead to one thing to another. It is for the reason that we are all curious to how to make our life improved and easy. It is because we are all curious to everything that surrounds us.

The discovery of one person will inspire the other to for new discovery. Or the limitation of the work of other will instigate the other to fill the inadequacy. All are in quest of for improvement, in quest of for new knowledge, in quest of for solutions to problems, in quest of for answers to every questions, in quest of for other ways to improve life, and make the impossible possible. Pushing to the ends of limitations of mankind and crossing the boundary of human intellect. Everything is for the sake of man’s curiosity, all for the sake of satisfaction in living and all for the sake of innovation.

The innovations of man had improved our life. The limits of our knowledge had expanded to a wider and bigger horizon. These innovations had its various starting point, with several of origins. The reasons are for uncovering the secrets of nature, of life, of earth, of universe. Along with come back in the company of answers to the questions from our curious minds. At the same time as others innovate for personal reasons and for personal interests.

As our ancestors continued to explore the earth they have arrive with various technologies. These technologies are used to uncover the things they are curious about. As they look up in the sky, they tend to ask their selves like what lies beyond the sky. In addition to their curiosity, what are the other things they could see in the universe? Just asking among themselves can’t help them arrive to answers to their questions. When Galileo Galilei used telescope for scientific observations of astronomical objects and discovered that there are four moons orbiting the Jupiter, resolved that the Milky Way Galaxy into countless stars, see dark spots on the Sun, and map the face of the Moon had lead to rapid rate of discoveries and insights in the history of astronomy. The development of telescope technology has become the giant leap forward in the 17th century however; on the other hand, early telescopes were not used for exploring the heavens but rather for military purposes. They used telescopes to detect approaching or advancing armies or ships (Villard, 2007).

This first approach made by Galileo had led other explorers to widen the horizon of knowledge. On the other hand, as scientists explore and used their discovered technology for scientific purposes others used these technologies for fighting, for war. They uses force to resolve things for the purpose of deciding questions at issue that cannot be settled by diplomatic means (Weiss et al., 2007).

Before the boom of scientific discoveries as the prime focus of mankind, it has been the war. By out lifting one another through the use of new discoveries in technology so that they can win against the other, their enemies. Humankind had wanted to create a strong, more explosive and more destructive weapons just for the sake of winning. It was from the history that powerful countries had wanted to expand their territories through invasion. Invading ones country would lead to war intended for protection, protecting their selves in opposition to the invaders. Or else the powerful countries would compete to among themselves of who could invade other countries the most or shall we taking more territory.

It is through war that mankind had discovered and created new technologies but on the other hand had its negative effects. It led to more creations of material destruction that means more lives lost. The most unforgettable event when we talked about war was the so called World War II. This has been the most devastating war in the history it is for the reason that it involves the commitment of a nation’s entire human resources as well as economic resources (Ziemke, 2007). It is because of war that led countries in creation of scientific and industrial projects like the development of atomic bombs.

The birth of war and the desire of some of self-interested man of war had brought the human race to the success unearthing and organization of technology. It also in war that cryptography as one of the most important mode of communication among them. They used cryptography to deliver important military tactics or military strategies against their enemies. The war may have been daunting but on the other side it forces us to create advance technology to protect ourselves and to outwit others.

War is just one of the most unforgettable yet one of the most significant events in the world’s history. However, putting that aside, their other events in relation to the birth of innovation of technology. Every night we could see the beautiful stars twinkling in the sky. And in the day we could feel the heat of the sun giving us warm as it touches our skin but what do we know what lies outside the earth. If we travel the space what do expect from it. What do we see? These are just some of the questions that came into the minds of our scientist in the past. After Galileo’s usage of telescope for astronomical studies, others had been enthused by this possibility creating bigger ones to arrive to more detailed information about the universe. However, it seems like it isn’t enough, mankind wanted more. It is because of man’s dissatisfaction and its curiosity that led man to space exploration. Not knowing what lies ahead outside the earth, not knowing what life like out there in the space.

To gain more understanding about space is through space exploration. It is the quest to use space travel to discover the nature of earth beyond earth since it has been the dream of mankind to leave their home planet and explore other worlds. This desire to explore the heavens is probably the as old as humankind. They had begun to launched the first artificial satellite and have begun venture into space even living aboard orbiting space stations for more than a year. These explorations have sparked the advances of new technologies, from rockets to communication equipments to computers. In addition to that space exploration had given mankind a new perspective on Earth and its neighbors in space (Chaikin, 2007).

If it is not because of man’s curiosity we would have been naïve still. It gave us courage to explore and expand our knowledge. Their have been several of events happened in the past that had help us innovate. As mankind deals with it personal desire we have always been dealing with diseases. We have suffered from back problems and tooth abscesses. Diseases have had a dramatic impact to the entire human history. These distressing epidemics of occurrence of infectious diseases had affected many people in a region at the same time that made people daunting to it and its effects (Sikorski and Peter, 2007).

The outbreaks of diseases had always been the cause of halt in man’s daily living, affecting every action and every event in our lives. Affected and had been affected by economic conditions, wars, and natural disasters. Just for example, it affects the course of military events, and changes the balance of power among different groups of people. In addition to that diseases have indeed had a huge impact to humans which far greater than any better-known calamities (Sikorski and Peter, 2007).

Diseases along with the other diseases had obliged mankind to look for possible cure. Seeking for ways to save human race before it is too late. With the available technologies had help doctors and other researchers to analyze the cause of the disease or an illness thus, gave them ideas for possible cure.

Their have been several events that may have happen in the past or may happen. The above mentioned situations are just one of them that led mankind to innovations more particularly in technology. It is either for personal interest or for the satisfaction of man’s curiosity that have led to our current situation. It either helpful or destructive on other way around it had helped us. In some way this events that have a huge mark to our history have given us the courage to explore more and learn more.

Legislation And E-commerce

I am not really sure about this...I am honestly confused with the question..."Several authors feel that legislation will never be able to control electronic commerce sufficiently to satisfy the demands of both governments and consumers. Critically assess this view, giving appropriate examples of legislation and its application." I don't know if I have answered the question right...but...this is what I have arrived...and also their are other some information down there that needed citation...I have limited resources...I'd love to accept any contributions about references...thanks in advanced...

********************

Electronic Commerce, more popularly known as e-commerce, had become popular a popular business transactions nowadays. It is the exchange of goods and services by means of internet or other computer networks. In addition to that it is the shopping, business transactions and business process involving selling and purchasing products through Web. Electronic commerce is takes place in various ways. Among these are Electronic data interchange, e-mail, fax and many others. And electronic commerce has several types and varieties of business that is conducted online that includes retail businesses that sell products to consumers, service providers that sell services to consumers, and business-to-business commerce. All of this different commerce is available through the net. However, among this commerce the retail transactions make up the largest part of electronic commerce (Scisco, 2007).

Since the emergence of computers and telecommunication technologies is also the start of electronic commerce. It is very popular these days and has already reached an insidious stage without us knowing it. Most of our transactions are than electronically and it has become a weapon by businesses to be used against its competitors. The competitions of business had reached to its wider perspective. The competition is not only within the country but to bigger arena. The competition is now around the globe. The existence of internet had made it all possible.

The birth of electronic commerce had improved our daily routines. It had made things easier for consumers, for business enthusiasts, for us. Lots of businesses today engage in electronic commerce for the reason that it offers several advantages to electronic commerce. Just for example, the purchase of products could be done through the internet thus helps us save time. In addition to that electronic commerce reduces transaction cost for the reason that it improves the flow of information and expands their markets.

The rapid growth of electronic commerce is because it offers a lot of benefits both for consumers and business enthusiasts. Among these consumer benefits are that communication is faster compared to before, you can meet people online and talk to people in Real time. It also allows you to promote yourself and publish or share work, reduce cost of information. Electronic commerce also offers you to buy online, bank online and even look for a job. However, the disadvantages are that it is you may lose privacy, misinformed and lot of others. For businesses, customer services are improved, increase revenue, competitive position is improved and attracts new investment. But, on the other hand, it may cause customer dissatisfaction and poor priority status (Toral, 2005).

It has become the language in the world of business today, electronic commerce. There is an increasing competition among the businessmen worldwide thus, instigating each other to come up with strategies to outwit its competitors, to attract more consumers. The businesses countries by countries are now engaging in electronic commerce. It is the center of attraction in every business. However, on the other hand, electronic commerce does not cover every aspects of business. It does not cover everything when it comes to the needs of every consumer. It still has its limitations. In some way, electronic commerce is not enough or sufficient to satisfy all the demands or the needs of consumers.

Technology, economics, law, and social relations are what electronic commerce made of, structure. These are what electronic commerce constituted of. Technology is most important unit in electronic commerce while economics are concerned with the production, distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods and services. Economics helps business sectors to analyze the demand and supply in order to achieve efficiency both for consumers and business enthusiasts. In economics, the theory of supply and demands states that when the supply exceeds demand thus, the prices of goods should be lowered; at the same time as when demand exceeds supply thus, the prices of goods should be higher (2006). Businessmen supply goods for consumers in accordance to their demands. Electronic commerce follows the traditional commerce the only difference is that transactions are done electronically.

As it rise in its popularity, government of each country had written laws for the protection of the consumers and business sectors. Every law varies in each country however the content with regards to the implementation of the law is to some extent similar. In addition to the structure of electronic commerce is that the laws serve as consumers and business sectors’ protection thus; it gives assurance that rights are not violated against in any technology related criminal offenses.

Laws are created to control unlawful acts. To define it, law is an body of official rules and regulations, generally found in constitutions, legislation, judicial opinions, and the like, that is used to govern a society and to control the behavior of its members (Probert, 2007). The principle of electronic commerce law is that whatever is applicable and authorized in the real world will also be treated the same in the electronic world by recognizing its electronic counterpart (Toral, 2005). However, on the other hand, there are opinions from various authors saying that the legislation will never be able to control electronic commerce sufficiently to satisfy the demands of both the government and the consumers. Why is that so?

Electronic commerce only covers business transactions that could only be or possibly be done electronically. There are legislations that govern this. These laws about electronic commerce in every country have the same objectives. For instance, in the Philippines, the law for electronic commerce or Republic Act 8792 this Act aims to facilitate domestic and international dealings, transactions, agreements, contract and exchanges and storage of information through the utilization of electronic, optical and similar medium, mode, instrumentality and technology to recognize the authenticity and reliability of electronic documents related to such activities and to promote the universal use of electronic transaction in the government and general public. In addition to this Act is that it shall apply to any kind of data message and electronic document used in the context of commercial and non-commercial activities to include domestic and international dealings, transactions, arrangements, agreements, contracts and exchanges and storage of information. And such service providers shall have no authority to modify or alter the content of the electronic data message or electronic document received or to make any entry therein on behalf of the originator, addressee or any third party unless specifically authorized to do so, and who shall retain the electronic document in accordance with the specific request or as necessary for the purpose of performing the services it was engaged to perform (Citation needed).

Among the demands of consumers is that the confidentiality of the data or information is protected. Privacy of personal information is a significant issue for some consumers. Different legal jurisdictions have different laws concerning consumer privacy, and different levels of enforcement (Wikipedia, 2008). In the midst of the electronic commerce law, Republic Act 8792, it provides recognition and use of electronic commercial and non-commercial transaction and documents as well as the penalties for unlawful use thereof and for other purposes. In addition to that it also states that consumers have the right to choose to the type and level of security that suit to their needs. In addition to, the law also mandates the authorities and parties with legal authorities that electronic data messages, electronic documents and electronic signatures shall not be shared or conveyed to any other person for confidentiality purposes. Thus, the consumers or the users of electronic data messages, electronic documents and electronic signatures are provided a sense of security that the confidentiality is rest assured.

In India, their electronic commerce law or Information Technology Act of 2000 states that it provides legal recognition for transactions carried out by means of electronic data interchange and other means of electronic communications which involves the use of alternative to paper-based methods of communication and storage of information, [and] to facilitate electronic filing of documents with the government agencies… (Citation needed). It is where it establishes the legal validity and enforceability of digital signatures and electronic records thus, this law wanted to protect consumers against any unlawful act.

Electronic commerce had brought improvement to both developed and developing countries. Like France, a developed country where there are strong impact on electronic commerce. Their progressive switch to a digital economy only proves that a careful implementation of the long-term viability of applications. Their implementation of the principles of electronic commerce with a voluntary policy aimed to stimulate the rise of Information Society and Digital Economy. That is to build an information society for all to prevent digital gap and to help their country to catch up with other countries in terms of interne usage. With this implementation and France’s involvement had removed the obstacles hindered the use of internet.

“Keeping the purpose of newsgroups and mailing lists; Legitimacy of the processing: no electronic mailing without consent; Prior information: no collection without the person’s knowledge; Right to object: possibility to object to the collection of one’s e-mail address for directs marketing purposes.” This is one of France Electronic Commerce Law that is comparable to the ones like in the Philippines. That is to consumer’s confidentiality of information. In the company of France adaptation of electronic commerce had made its marketing more flexible, more internationalized, more accustomed to competition and reorganized accordingly (citation needed).

The creation of Electronic Commerce Law to every country is to serve it as a guide and to recognize and use of electronic commercial and non-commercial transactions and documents. In addition to that penalties are specified for those who abuse and for those who do not follow the law. The legislation had satisfied the government and consumer demands because the use of electronic commerce improves economic efficiency, it allows the use of business models, magnifies the effect of other changes going on in business, and it results to some changes in a society (Citation needed).

The emergence of electronic commerce had help to develop economic status. The results to economic, business and transaction industries have brought up changes to a country. Just like in Canada that their reliance on Electronic commerce had an increased in their sales of goods and services over the internet as of 2001. Implementation of electronic commerce seemed to a country’s economic growth and stabilization. Foreseeing these possibilities, lot of leaders of every country had started to implement electronic commerce because of its huge help to its market, to its economy. And as to the implementation of electronic commerce government plays an important role to the growth of electronic commerce. Because a fully structured e-commerce law is very important to countries that invest well on companies and individuals that perform an exchange of information or transactions using any form of communication. And the law had helped the country boost electronic commerce and made the country as one of the legitimate players in the global marketplace. In addition to that, electronic commerce laws gives appropriate consideration to the threat that fraud and deception on the Internet pose to the growth and public acceptance of electronic commerce. And these laws establish safeguards that can avert many of the abusive practices that marked earlier technological innovations in the marketplace (Citation needed).

Electronic commerce had a huge part in businesses nowadays. It had improved our lifestyle and it made things easy. The traditional business transactions in the past can de done through internet or any other electronic means. Because of its advantages that it offers had been the prime reason why consumers and government adapted it. Though it has lots of benefits to offer on the other hand, it still has its disadvantages on its side. For assurance, governments had written laws to protect business enthusiasts and consumers rights along with penalties for those who abuse or those who do not follow the law. The laws primary concern is to protect the confidentiality of personal information of consumers who are engaged with electronic businesses. These laws are written in accordance to consumers needs and as for the government’s role are to implement this law.

"I Think, therefore I exist"

The quotation "I think, therefore I exist" is somewhat confusing. The message of the message is way too deep and thus, difficult to interpret. This statement made by Rene Descartes could lead you in asking your self "Do I really exist?" I am not really sure if I really do exist in this world. Literally, I do exist. But on the other hand, I feel like I don't exist. I feel like I am living up in two different personas, two persons living together. People around me see me differently the way I see my self. It is not a problem at all. It is just me. With my family, classmates and friends I smile but on the other hand, it is the other way around when I am at home. I am in fact a “loner.” :-) That is the real me. I am an IT student but I also belong to the world of arts. Arts are my outlet when I am feeling down. I release all the hidden emotions that cannot be expressed by just saying. Everything stated there are the real feelings of mine. Not everyone may know but it is what my other persona does.

The feelings only me, my God and my arts knows; feelings that are hidden to others. My joy, my sadness, my loneliness, my hopes and my agony.

Worthy Person, Worthy IT Professional

Worthy, I have heard this word a million times before but yet, I really don’t know its real meaning. What is the word worthy? Why does this word exist? The word worthy, is it merely just a word? Or is there something deeper meaning beyond its word itself, can any anyone narrow its meaning? It has been used by most people. It is the mostly asked.

Are you worthy? Am I worthy to live in this vicious world? Or am I the total exact opposite of its meaning? Could we measure a person’s worth in this world? Probably I’ll in the lowest rank. These are some of the many questions that came to my mind and keep asking my self, “Am I worthy enough to live?” A question that is too difficult for me to answer. A question that leave someone in confusion. A question with a very unsure answer.

Is there someone among the million of people in this world knows that they are worthy? If there are so, I envy them. I don’t know my worth in this world. For the reason that I don’t know if I am worthy enough to live in this world. Moreover, I don’t even know if I am worthy enough to my chosen career, to be called as an IT Professional. I just don’t know.

However, on the other hand, the word worthy just what is it? To define the word worthy, according to the dictionary, it is somebody who is good or morally upright or a respectable person. Am I fit to what the word worthy defines? If yes, I don’t know why and how. If not, are there ways to make my self praiseworthy? To be a worthy person, a respectable person, or a good person, they say it starts with small deeds. However, if a person fails to do so then, how could you do big deeds just to be called a worthy person?

I remembered a preach from a priest back in our hometown. It is about doing good deeds to be a worthy person on the eyes of God and in the eyes of man. The preach was about a jar filled with different sizes of stones from the smallest stones to bigger ones. A person was asked to clear the jar by taking out all the stones to another place one by one. A jar full of stones, the person tries to take out the big ones first but is having a hard time because the smaller stones blocking. So, later, the person realized that taking out the smaller ones first would make it faster and easier. Thus, the person succeeded in clearing out the jar.

The story foretold above is just like in the real world. To become a worthy person starting from small contributions will lead to bigger ones. To become worthy, it is impossible to do big innovations. It is just impossible. Also not everyone is able to do so. Small deeds will lead you to something bigger. Although it is just small and simple however, if its value is more worthy than the things done by big people then it is worthy enough, more than enough.

There is a saying that the only thing constant in this world is change. If you found your self not worthy then, change for good. Changing for the better is a difficult thing to do. As I have said before, I am not sure if I am a worthy person. How could I possibly be? I can’t find my self to be called a worthy individual thus, change is needed. By starting from doing deeds will surely make me a better one, someday. Being a worthy individual is not as easy as you thought. It impossible, not everyone is able to be. Step by step I will.

Everything around us is changing. Technology is one of the most ideal examples of change. There has been a rapid pace of change in technology in these past years. New technologies were introduced to improve the quality of our life. It is for our own comfort. It is for ease of getting things done. Technology has change the way of our living. And it makes me wonder, “Are there still things that are needed to improve in our life?”

From the past until today, mankind had developed various things to make it easy for us, the new generation. Wherever you look you can see the overflowing river of technology. Technology, technology, it is now the language of our generation. However, on the other hand, despite of the presence of new technology does our life? Has it really made our life improved? I am talking about something personal. Isn’t technology has made mankind very lazy? Is that what improving quality of life meant? People can’t even throw or segregate their garbage properly. They even use technology to abuse nature for personal greediness. These man’s greedy activities that result to a more horrifying situations. Just for example, deforestation to flood, and various other activities. Can technology prevent these things to get into worst? Yes, if we all have the will. Definitely it will.

Technologist had contributed a lot in the society. Most goal of all Information Technology enthusiasts apparently to improve the quality of our life. They are creating, modifying, and innovating new technology one from another. Most of all inventors meet in one goal. All are fighting for one goal. It is to improve. It does not matter whether they improve a new technology for personal interest or for everyone’s benefits. Thus, as one of these so-called Information Technology enthusiasts, I am also aiming of improving one’s quality of life. I would be starting to small things until I am able to innovate and contribute to something better and bigger. It is best to start on small things, then in that time, my learning and experience will be wider leading to bigger contributions and bigger technology innovations in the future.

Neil Armstrong once said that one small step from a man; one big step to mankind, starting to small technology is a good small step. As an IT professional, if I were to contribute something in the society to improve the quality of life I would like to innovate something that will be useful to mankind. A technology that will serve as a guide people and thus, will be a great help to people’s daily living.

We can foresee some simple problems that are needed to be address, if we look closely and carefully. These problems are simple that may have been addressed by the government however; it doesn’t give a positive effect. This only means that a strong solution is needed. Just for example, the disposing of garbage. It has been one of the major problems in our country. It has been unstoppable. Day by day, tons of garbage is produced by Filipinos. There are various solutions and alternatives presented to address the problem but however, it seems like nothing happened. Since technology has been almost running our lives, one of the causes of the problems some say thus, technology is also the solution. A saying says that the root of the problem is also the solution. I wanted to create a technology that will address this problem, the garbage disposal problem.

Firstly is a garbage bin that has the capability of automatic segregation, it will segregate the biodegradable and non-biodegradable. In addition, it will group non-biodegradable in accordance to their similarities. All bottles are group together, Styrofoam in one group, and so with others. Also, the garbage bin will have a weight calculating ability; calculating if the garbage weight has exceed to a maximum weight. If it has reach the limit weight the garbage bin will send a signal that the garbage has to be collected right away.

In addition to the garbage bin’s capability, if the signal is from the biodegradable the signal will be received by a biodegradable department that manages the biodegradable for other purposes. The same goes to non-biodegradable. The signal will be sent to the department that manages the non-biodegradable for the recycling purposes. In this way the garbage disposal will be managed well. The segregation is well assured.

Another proposal regarding the garbage problem is that there are some people who are too lazy in throwing their garbage in the garbage bin even if it is just 10 steps away. Thus, this will result to untidiness and it is not a very good sight. Also, it will only contribute to pollution leading to another serious problem in the future. Since, among the study about technology, robotics has been the primary focus of research among the information technology enthusiast and thus, I wanted to create one that will maintain the cleanliness of the city. It is called the “Street Sweeper.” A question suddenly pops up in my mind, it is that isn’t this technology will spoil people? It will make people to just throw their garbage everywhere? Well, this technology will be a helper for those who clean the street everyday. And also this robot, street sweeper, has a camera attached that will record those who throw their garbage inconsiderably. It will take pictures and will be recorded automatically in the database for punishment later.

The robot Street Sweeper and the proposed new garbage bin will work hand in hand to keep the cleanliness of a city and thus, will hopefully eliminate the garbage problem in the future.

I have wanted to help those who are impaired, especially those who are visually impaired people. Although they can walk freely in the city however, when I see them I am really curious if they have that 100 percent sense of security, walking in busy places, riding public vehicles, even crossing roads. I really wonder if they could feel security or assurance that after they cross they are safe. Thus, I wanted to create a technology that will be their helper in going to busy places. It will be their eyes. It will inform the owner what is ahead. For example, crossing the road it will calculate the speed of cars passing by or will inform the owner that the street safe to cross by. The technology has a biometric attached capability that will recognize its owner. It has a fingerprint biometric, face recognition, and body temperature recognition of its owner. It has also wearable computer along. It is attached to the owner so that when the owner wants to go somewhere it will just press the button that will signal the robot to come near the owner, to turn off and to turn it on again. With this, the owner will have a sense of security and an assurance that they are safety while they are in the public, busy places. Shall I call it Eye-shield Robot? It is a robot that will serve as the eye of its owner who is visually impaired.

The garbage bin, Street Sweeper, and Eye-shield Robot these proposed technologies of mine are considered simple and small. It only addresses simple problems in the society. Although it is just a small contribution however its value is not lacking in any meaning that would give purpose to life. These small things could possibly change the world. No matter how small it is if I would contribute to society to improve the quality of life it not important whether it is small or not. Its value is what matters the most and it is worthy despite of being small.

On the other hand, still, I don’t know if this will help me a worthy person or a worthy IT professional. It is just small and there is nothing special. However, it will be a good start isn’t it? I shall end this with a quotation by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt saying that far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.

FuTurE: Scared or Not?

Future? Who knows what future lies? Even in technology you can not predict what's the future of technology. No one knows. Human mind is very mysterious. It is scary.

Yes, it is indeed scary but not to the point that it's too scary that I can't face it. A part of me tells that I should not fear the future. However, a part of me is scared. No one could change what will happen. They say that we live like in a storybook where God had written what our future would be.

Whether it is true or not I can do nothing about it.I can do nothing what will happen about the future but I can do something for "today." If I'll live at my best everyday surely I will not regret what will happen tomorrow.

The Use Of Technology

Technology has influenced our daily living, our lives. It is because of the emergence of technology we have become the center of information technology.

- The information is within our hands and it has become reachable.
- Makes our daily living easy.
- It is entertaining thus, gives us satisfaction.

According to Wikipedia (2008), the following are the factors that affect technological change:

- Elites. People who have knowledge that creates new technology
- Corporation. Driven by economic value benefit in technology
- Government. Publishes laws that guarantee investment can process properly
- Globalization. Technology motivates the realization of the trend of globalization

Who is in the Mirror?

*************************************************************************************

Future...Who are you in the future? This is a question that seems unanswerable. No one is sure about the future. No one knows what lays in our future but before tomorrow theirs today and yesterday. Where am I now? And how did I get here?

I am unsure of whom I am now and how did I get here. As I remembered, I am a person who preferred to be alone. I considered my self a woman of few words. I never thought of asking myself of “who I am,” not until yesterday, November 22, 2008.

That day had become my mirror. That day is the day when I seriously asked my self “who am I?” I tried to go back in the past to see the “me”. I realized that there are good and bad personalities that retain today and some of it where changed as time flies.

They say that it need someone enable for you to see the real you. I am not a perfect being but I always try my best. However, I am always discontented with what I do. I always think that my self aren’t good enough. I never had a confidence in what I do. Maybe that is what I am.

How did I get here? I don’t know. I am neither good nor bad person. I am just a person who tried my best to be a good citizen. I tried to change my bad personality for the better and tried to retain the good ones. There are two personalities I have that I always wanted to change. I am unorganized and easily distracted. That is what I am working right now. It is not easy, but I am trying my best.

How about the future? Who am I in the future? I still don’t know. I am unsure in my future. On thing I only know, the future is an endless learning. I have enough experience but I am still willing to learn.

To what happened last November 22, 2008 is one event that gave me a lesson. I accept the truth that we did something unsatisfactorily. As the reporter, we should have prepared earlier prior the presentation time. I’ll try my best to correct it. Sensei, honto ni gomenasai.

My Fight

Thomp, thomp, thomp… I could hear my heart beating. I don’t know why. I feel so uncomfortable but still I continue to write down my proposed topic. I am not confident enough. I am not sure if my topic was good enough. But still I know inside me I want to pursue it.

Thomp, thomp, thomp… the beat of my heart is rapid. It’s racing. My hand is shaking as I click the “Send” button. I am afraid that my topic will be rejected. But still I want to give it a try. As click the “Send” button I remembered the days when I’m formulating my topic. The days when I am bragging my eldest brother to help me sort my ideas. Even though, I know his busy studying but he still he helped me. Niisan, arigatoo gozaimasu!

Thomp, thomp, thomp… nervous. Unsure. I don’t know if luck will be on my side. But in September 3, 2008 at past 10:00 pm I received a message from a classmate of mine. The message was telling me that my topic was approved. After that I can’t go back to sleep. I am happy that my topic was approved.

Thomp, thomp, thomp…nervous still. I know, my fight doesn’t end here. It is just the beginning. Fighting!

Niisan, yakusoku! Watashi wa gambarimasu!

Difference between method and methodology

The difference between method and methodology is that method is the tools of scientific investigation and methodology is the principles that determine how such tools are deployed and interpreted (Klein, 2007). In my own understanding, method are the tools you used in your study like statistics while methodology is the principles which governs how this methods are implemented, or the system of principles, practices, and procedures applied to any specific branch of knowledge (Mischel, 2002).

Article Review: A Robotic Brain-Computer Interface

I decided to make a review on the posted article of Ms. Clenemao Galgao about “A Robotic brain-computer interface.” Its main discussion is about robotics focusing on brain-computer interface (BCI). BCI is a direct communication pathway between a human (or animal brain) and an external device (Wikipedia, 2008).

The article was based from the research of Caltech (California Institute of Technology) who developed a robotic device that establishes an interface between computers and the brain by positioning electrodes in neural tissue (Piquepaille, 2008). It states that the study is beneficial to paralyzed people for it gives them a chance to operate the computers and the robots with their minds. In addition, the author states that it provides users to search billions of images with corresponding small amount of data which can be seen in just a second (Galgao, 2008).

As the article presented the topic regarding BCI it helps me view BCIs significance. As the research on BCI started in 1970s till mid-1990s the purpose of BCI is to restore damage hearing, sight, and movement it has been very helpful especially to people who are impaired and it gives them a chance to live normal again. In addition, it is interesting to know how “BCIs detects small changes in brain signals to provide a path of control for devices that does depend on muscle movement. (Ourand, 2004)”

Key factors for publishing research in top-tier journals

According to the cardinal rule, “a scientific experiment is not complete until the results have been published” (Kate Devine, 2001). Every authors hoped that their paper to get published but however not everyone are lucky, usually most of the submitted papers are rejected for the reason that the study design is flawed or poor and lack of detail in methods.

Every paper submitted is reviewed thoroughly, in PLoS ONE, “to determine whether or not the paper reach the level of importance” [2], through peer review. In addition, “these journals are rigorously edited and require very sound science and results that have meaning and application in the field. Other journals have a much lower rejection rate and are not as tightly edited, but they generally contain good research.” [1]

Assignment 5: How do you know if a piece of research work is good or not? How are they evaluated?

Being curious around us, that curiosity that leads to something beneficial that will satisfy that curiosity. Investigate and do various researches leading to a good research paper. But how will someone evaluates that his research is considered a good research? From an article I read, Criteria of a Good Scientific Research Paper, it states that a good research satisfies a certain criteria. The author of that article said that “whatever may be the types of research works and studies, one thing that is important is that they all meet on the common ground of scientific method employed by them.” [1]

It says that a good research should be systematic, logical, empirical and replicable. In addition, in the Criteria Qualities of Good Scientific Research article, it satisfies the following:

(1) The purpose of the research should be clearly defined and common concepts be used.

(2) The research procedure used should be described in sufficient detail to permit another researcher to repeat the research for further advancement, keeping the continuity of what has already been attained.

(3) The procedural design of the research should be carefully planned to yield results that are as objectives as possible.

(4) The researcher should report with complete frankness, flaws in procedural design and estimate their effects upon the findings.

(5) The analysis of data should be sufficiently adequate to reveal its significance and the methods of analysis used should be appropriate. The validity and reliability of the data should be checked carefully.

(6) Conclusions should be confined to those justified by the data of the research and limited to those for which the data provide an adequate basis.

(7) Greater confidence in research is warranted if the researcher is experienced, has a good reputation in research and is a person of integrity.

Assignment 4: What do you think is the role of research topic in deciding your future career?

In my own opinion, the decided research topic determines ones future career because the topic decided shows ones expertise and interest showing ones strength in a specific field by focusing on the topic the researcher likes to explore.

Assignment 3: what usually topics should usually be address?

As a student of University of Southeastern Philippines I think that the topics should usually be addressed are in line with my field of expertise or field of interest. If the research topic is in line with researcher's expertise then it would be more convenient because there will be less adjustment to do so. Furthermore, the topics should be productive. Or shall I say topics that are helpful to the school as well as the society.

Assignment 2: State of CS Research and Variety of Technical Topics

We had a new assignment in CS research. It asked us to find any article/information and examine the state of CS research. Also, discuss the variety of technical topics. So I look for CS research papers and found an article that interest me. It's a study from Stanford University, the article was entitled BioAct!

In compliance of the assignment here is my article regarding the BioAct of Stanford students who won awards: Best Student Paper award at JCDL 2006 and Brian Shackel Award at Interact 2005.

The students of Stanford University conducted a study, BioAct, to help biodiversity researchers for three purposes:

1) To Acquire – to help in acquiring digital materials in the field,

2) To Curate – to help in managing these online holdings, and

3) To Transfer (or disseminate) – to help transfer the knowledge to other researchers, museums, and the public [1].

Due to the increasing diversity of data to be gathered it is a great challenge in identifying and cataloging the data. Therefore, the proponents’ created three sets of tools: (1) Tools for speedy data entry and small-group collaboration in the field, (2) Tools for large scale collaboration in distributed collection curation, and (3) Tools for semi-directed search and browsing of digital biodiversity materials [1].

The study is favorable since the study utilized the technology in gathering and maintaining the collections of the biodiversity documents around the globe, and to educate students and the public about the aspects of natural history.

From what I read and understand about BioAct the variety of technical topics that are discussed are bioinformatics and computational biology which involves the use of techniques including applied mathematics, informatics, statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, chemistry, and biochemistry to solve biological problems usually on the molecular level [2].
